The artwork of the sick has more to teach the caring profession about humanity than any medical text book. Materia medica, an exhibition of images from medicine at the Wellcome Institute in London until 30 March, includes poignant contributions from seven artists with a personal experience of medicine. Some have been close to death through ill health, while others have tended the sick themselves. All convey an acute sense of vulnerability and compassion.
