An excellent framework for the study of maps is How Maps Work by Alan M.
MacEachren (The Guildford Press, £36, ISBN 0 89862 589 0). You can find
out why particular maps work in particular ways and how to produce better maps
and graphic representations. It will be of general use to anyone interested in
effective visual presentation of information.
