Children suffer from accidents while skiing because the
bindings designed to attach skis to boots are poorly adjusted, says a researcher
from the Monash University Accident Research Centre. The bindings are meant to
release under pressure. But Caroline Finch, a specialist in sports
injuries, says that children often used borrowed equipment or hand-me-down skis
fitted with bindings that had not been adjusted to suit their weight. Finch has
just spent 18 months examining injuries in a wide range of popular sports. Her
findings have been compiled into fact sheets being distributed by the Victorian
Department of Sport and Recreation.
