In the beginning, “Go forth and multiply” was a simple enough dictum. But
developments in in vitro fertilisation have spawned a range of ethical dilemmas
for Christian theologians. In Fertility and Faith (Inter-Varsity Press,
£12.99, ISBN 0 85111 180 7), Protestant pastor Brendan McCarthy claims the
church has failed to influence the moral debate on AIDS, surrogacy and so on.
For nonbelievers, the book provides a useful but partial guide to international
legislation on human fertility.
