The latest entrant to the Einstein industry is Robert Goldman with Einstein’s God (Jason Aronson, $20, ISBN 1 56821 983 0). He tackles the apparent need of Einstein to find a spiritual substitute for religious belief. Goldman has had access to much unpublished correspondence bearing on what Einstein’s remark “I am a deeply religious non-believer” showed about him. It is clear that spiritual concerns were fundamental to his nature and thought, but he never succeeded in satisfactorily defining his position. An absorbing read on many levels.
