Complaints that some of Monsanto’s adverts for genetically modified food
misled the public have been upheld by Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority.
The authority ordered Monsanto to stop claiming that it has tested the safety of
GM foods for 20 years, when it has only been doing so for 16 years. The firm was
also criticised for arguing that genetic engineering is an extension of
traditional crossbreeding. “Any company active in this area has to be 100 per
cent watertight in its claims,” says Chris Reed of the authority.
