Forget the earth-mother image of organic farming. Mammon is muscling in on a
world market that was worth $15 billion in 1999 and is growing by up to
30 per cent annually in many countries, according to a report by the Leatherhead
Food Research Association in Surrey. “Many of the largest multinationals now
have products competing in the market,” says the association. The largest market
is the US, worth $6.5 billion, followed by Germany ($2.4 billion)
and Japan ($1.4 billion).
